God

GOD

Sitting here on the couch this evening I’m thinking about God.  It’s strange that I have to make this post, but I think it’s worthy of sharing.  I grew up in a pentecostal-like church with people speaking in tongues, passing out in the aisles, and praising the Lord from here to eternity.  I expect that when I’m around certain groups of people I’m going to here about God, The Lord, Jesus, etc..  What’s difficult and disappointing to me is when I get preached to and judged about my beliefs in God (or lack of belief) by other yogi’s and especially by other yoga teachers.  In all honesty, I’ve never seen more dogma and judgment around God and spirituality than I have in the yoga community.  And I’m not being hyperbolic.

Please make space for people to have their own beliefs.  And please don’t be shocked and surprised when you hear someone say they don’t believe in God or in reincarnation or in past lives or in the ‘universe.’  Being an atheist or agnostic does not make one less spiritual, less of a yogi, or less of human being.

Mary Oliver says:  "Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood…. Let me keep my distance, always, from those who think they have the answers."

Thank you.
